Budding stars taste first league action

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 24th Jan 2002.

TABLE Tennis coach Gerald Cosens is hoping the launch of the Norton College Junior League last week will breed stars of the future.

Cosens, who plays in the Ryedale League for Swinton, has been coaching youngsters at various schools in the region since last May. And now the 20 youngsters taking part in the league have had their first taste of competitive action at Norton College.

He said: "This is what the coaching has all been about, being able to play competitively. The purpose of the league is to introduce students to the local (adult) leagues when they are old enough.

"There's no reason why some of them can't go on to play at county and even country level."

The launch of the league, which will last for nine weeks, followed a successful table tennis exhibition at Norton College at the end of last year.

The ten teams will play under the English Table Tennis Association's new scoring system of 11-up. Cosens said if the league went well, the plan was to split into two divisions for next season.

Joe Seed and Jake Keyworth (Malton School), Matthew Kemp (Pickering School), Ryan Hood (Amotherby School), and Joel Wright and Michael Linsley (Norton College) all obtained their first 100pc record. Edward Roundthwaite and Peter Clarke (Malton School), and Laurence Keyworth and Alby Brenchley (Rillington School) competed well to each record a 50pc average.

Results: M J Shredders (Joel Wright/ Michael Linsley) 5pts; Big Dave (Joe Seed/Peter Clarke) 4pts; Tim's Terriers (Laurence and Jake Keyworth) 4pts; Meteors (Ryand Hood/Alby Brenchley) 4pts; Phoenix (Matthew Kemp/Craig McIvor) 3pts; Fireball (Bobby Leach/Ricky Teasdale) 2pts; College Girls (Imogen Defty/Jill Monkman) 1pt; Damij (Jimmy Tomkinson/David Chugg) 1pt; Dynamo Spinners (James Dempsey/Edward Roundthwaite) 1pt; Roja (Robert Monkman/James Stone) 0pts.
