Villagers' Herculean task

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 24th Jan 2002.

A REMOTE Ryedale village with fewer than 150 residents faces a mammoth task of raising as much as £200,000 to restore its village hall.

But already the people of Thixendale are making plans to carry out the renovation of the landmark listed building, once the local school and for many years run by the Youth Hostel Association.

Plans have been submitted to Ryedale District Council to refurbish and extend the imposing 140-year-old building, said the secretary Eileen Birrell.

"It is in a fairly run down state at present, but there is keen enthusiasm in Thixendale to restore it because we are an isolated community."

The picture-postcard village of Thixendale has only the most skeletal of bus services, although it is able to support two shops, one of which caters for tourists visiting the Yorkshire Wolds, and the other providing a cafe.

"We have had help and advice from the district council and the Yorkshire Rural Community Council," said Mrs Birrell. "We are hoping to start work this year and, once the scheme is completed, I am sure we shall have a very fine hall which will be well-used by people living in neighbouring villages as well as Thixendale."
