Game fair sets new record

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Wednesday 6th Aug 2003.

The CLA game fair attracted record crowds in Yorkshire last weekend - with fly fishing, shooting and even trampolining on offer.

The three-day fair, which was held at Harewood House, was attended by a record crowd of 131,000, who turned out to enjoy the world's largest countryside event.

The record attendance breaks the previous 126,000, set at Broadlands last year.

Frank Boddy, chairman of this year's committee, said: "We are thrilled that the CLA game fair's reputation and the enthusiasm so many people have for the countryside has attracted this number of visitors. Harewood House is a wonderful venue and the perfect site to stage the world's largest countryside event."

Panama hats rather than heavy tweeds were the order of the day as temperatures soared into the high 20s - and the feeling around the crowd and the 850+ exhibitors was upbeat.

The theme for the event was to `Give it a go', and with so many recreational activities and countryside pursuits there was plenty to try out.

Celebrities from TV soap rivals Emmerdale and Coronation Street were taking part in a real life shoot-out as they prepared for a Yorkshire-Lancashire clay pigeon shooting competition.

And football and film superstar Vinnie Jones, star of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was at home to complete the shooting line-up.
