Promotion for Amotherby A

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Wednesday 5th Mar 2003.

Ryedale League - In division two, congratulations are in order to high-flying Amotherby A who are now guaranteed a place in division one for next season. Only Ryedale Laundry A can prevent them crowning their season as champions. The two teams will meet soon in what looks like being a championship decider.

CSL and Westow played out a 5-5 draw in a keenly-contested match. CSL's Ken Mills made short work of the Westow players in straight games. Neil Smith scored two wins for CSL, while Westow's scorers were Roger Dunning (2), John Clayton and Colin Payne.

The improving Helmsley B side of Dave Lunn, Jonathon Parkinson and Geoff Harrison all recorded two wins each and triumphed in the doubles, as they overcame Coneysthorpe C 7-3.

League records show that there have been over 104 players involved in division one and division two games in the league this season. This is up on previous years and bodes well for the future as table tennis regains its popularity among young people in Ryedale.

Swinton A have leap-frogged Ryedale SC A to go back to the top of division one, although Ryedale have games in hand.

Coneysthorpe A's Tim Adams produced his best table tennis of the season as he recorded three wins over Swinton players. However, Mike Fenley scored two wins for Swinton, as did Martin Medlar, while Ray Mitchell took one victory. Haswell grabbed one win for Coneysthorpe before teaming up with Adams to win the doubles to force a 5-5 draw.

Ryedale SC A defeated their C team 10-0, with John Freeman solid all evening. Ryedale SC D took their first points of the season with a 5-5 draw against Scarborians A. For Scarborians, Terry Eames picked up three single wins, while team-mate Steve Miller won once. For Ryedale, Peter Bryan and Alan Kirkwood scored two wins each and Jean Wardman one picked up one win.
