IF there's something I need which I can't trace in Norton or Malton, then I make a note and, now and again, have a trip over to York. Often I'm lucky, but whether or not I usually come back with something of interest. I was looking for some eight-inch legs for a stool I'd made, on which I'd originally used some shorter ones. Easy I thought. Often sold in pre-packs, a bundle of four, but none in Malton, and as it turned out I couldn't find any in York. In fact, those most interesting of all shops, the DIYs, seem very scarce these days, and the only one I know in the city could only offer Queen Anne legs, which were bigger than the stool itself.  more...
