TODAY, there are so many cure-alls available that I wonder which is the one which most folk have on hand. When I was a lad, the favourite cure for all those scrubbed knees - almost anything in fact - was Boracic Ointment. Boracic, whilst it is a mild antiseptic, was cool and soothing and I suspect it had an excellent psychological effect for a youngster. As I grew older, I noticed that it just `disappeared', but you could buy a product called Boric Ointment, and I wondered if it was one and the same. Only tonight, perhaps 50 years later, have I got round to checking on this, and my dictionary says Boracic, see Bocis, which, as I see it, means it's one and the same, but why its name was shortened I haven't discovered. more...
