SWELTERING in the heat wave, people forgot the inclement conditions of the early summer and it was curious to note that no one ascribed the sunny weather to atomic interference, which was freely given as the cause of rains and winds. All was forgotten and although some found the heat too much for them, the majority enjoyed the welcome rays of the sun to the full. The main object was to keep cool and while the female sex donned their lightest attire, the men, not so fortunately placed, discarded their collars and ties and many went about in their shirt sleeves. It was interesting to see scholars of one school in Malton having their lessons in the school yard and they and their teachers appeared to be enjoying the novelty.  more...
